28 Nov Dress to Impress: What to wear to a Christmas Party
The appropriate attire for a Christmas work party can vary significantly. With so many different dress codes and styles to choose from, it can be difficult to know what to wear.
That’s why we created a comprehensive guide, which will help you not only find the perfect outfit for the occasion but also make you feel and look your best.
WHAT’S THE DRESS CODE?
The first step is to figure out what the dress code is. You might be lucky and find your answer on the invitation. However, more often than not, you’ll have to put on your Sherlock Holmes hat and start searching for clues.
A good idea is to check in with your colleagues about what they’ll be wearing or reach out directly to the event organisers.
What’s the location?
A good clue could be the venue of the Christmas party. If your company hired out a restaurant or a hotel – then we would recommend to pull out all the stops and dress to impress. If the party is happening at the pub however, then a smart-casual attire might be more appropriate.
Lunch vs. Dinner
Consider whether the party is taking place during the day or in the evening. Evening events generally lean towards more formal attire, whereas daytime events tend to be more casual.
Hopefully, these clues will give you a good starting point in figuring out how formal you should dress. Now, let’s move on to the actual outfit ideas.
FORMAL
This month, we had the pleasure of collaborating with the celebrity stylist, Phill Tarling, who shared some great styling insights.
When dressing for a Christmas office party, it’s generally expected that you up your game a little. In fact, Phill’s favourite new catch phrase is: ’Office party is not office wear.’
His go-to look includes a classic tuxedo, in this case it’s a velvet navy tux by a Swedish brand Cavaliere. He states: ‘The classic tuxedo jacket goes beyond black tie events and red carpets – it’s a smart investment that effortlessly elevates your office party style.’
If a classic tux with a white shirt is too cliché for you, Phil recommends opting for a monochromatic look. It creates a continuous line of colour from head to toe, which can visually lengthen your silhouette and result in a leaner appearance.
SMART
The best way to think about smart Christmas party dress code is that it’s a slightly more festive version of businesswear.
You can achieve that effect through some playful elements, like pocket squares, funky waistcoats and shirts with unique cuff details.
We recommend a classic navy suit as it’s a flattering colour for most men. Combined with brown shoes you can add a contrast to the rich navy hue, creating a visually appealing and sophisticated look.
SMART-CASUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY
The best way to describe smart casual dress code is a blend of polished and relaxed attire. The easiest way to achieve this look is by replacing the “formal” trousers with a pair of your favourite jeans.
By combining a waistcoat, a jacket with a funky pocket square and jeans, you’ll achieve that perfect balance of smart and causal. Opt for dark-wash jeans that are well-fitting and free of rips or distressing. Good brands to look at are Jacob Cohen, Tramarossa or BOSS.

CASUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY
While a casual dress code for a work Christmas party eliminates the worry of underdressing, it’s still important to make an effort and infuse your look with a touch of festive spirit.
Instead of your everyday tees and sneakers, consider opting for a pair of dark-wash jeans or chinos paired with a crisp button-down shirt and a stylish sweater. Elevate the look further with a suit jacket in a complementary colour.
For footwear, swap your trainers for a pair of Brogues or Chelsea boots. Accessories like a watch or a belt can add a touch of refinement.
Conversation starters
If you want your outfit to be a great conversation starter – opt for a more bold look with a patterned shirt by Claudio Lugli, Giordano or Warwicks, pairing them with navy jeans and brown brogues.
Another great piece is this cobalt blue velvet jacket by Claudio Lugli – you will definitely get a lot of attention with this one!
